Chronic kidney disease clinical features and renal replacement therapies

چکیده
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing health problem globally — the incidence of patients reaching end-stage renal disease (ESRD) has more than doubled in Europe and the US during the past two decades. According to the UK renal registry, 774 people per million of the population required renal replacement therapy (RRT) in 2008, which was an increase of 4.4% over the previous year. About 2% of the NHS annual budget is specifically allocated to RRT (both dialysis and transplantation), a spend which is likely to continue.

Experimental strategies to reverse chronic renal disease.
Progression of chronic nephropathies still represents a major challenge for clinical nephrologists. Specific therapies that prevent patients from requiring dialysis or transplantation are still not available. However, recent experimental studies have demonstrated that regression of advanced lesions in the kidney can be achieved. This review summarizes the recent therapeutic advances using exper...
متن کاملCongenital Hepatic Fibrosis: An Uncommon Cause of Chronic Renal Failure
Congenital Hepatic Fibrosis (CHF) is a rare disease that affects both the liver and kidneys. Congenital hepatic fibrosis (CHF) is an autosomal recessive inherited malformation defined pathologically by a variable degree of periportal fibrosis and irregularly shaped proliferating bile ducts. Affected individuals also have impaired renal function, usually caused, in children and teenagers, by an...

Acute kidney injury (AKI) research in the past decade has mostly focused upon development of a standard AKI definition, validation of early novel biomarkers to predict AKI prior to serum creatinine rise and predict AKI severity, and assessment of aspects of renal replacement therapies and their impact on survival. Given the independent association between AKI and mortality in the acute phase, s...
متن کاملAntimicrobial dosing concepts and recommendations for critically ill adult patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy or intermittent hemodialysis.
Infectious diseases and impaired renal function often occur in critically ill patients, and delaying the start of appropriate empiric antimicrobial therapy or starting inappropriate therapy has been associated with poor outcomes. Our primary objective was to critically review and discuss the influence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI) on the clinical pharmacokinetic ...
متن کاملSpanish guidelines for the management of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.
Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most frequent cause of genetic renal disease and accounts for 6-10% of patients on renal replacement therapy (RRT). Very few prospective, randomized trials or clinical studies address the diagnosis and management of this relatively frequent disorder. No clinical guidelines are available to date. This is a consensus statement presenting...
